Sun Direct to double its subscribers

MUMBAI: Sun Direct, a direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, aims to double its subscriber base to six million from the present 3.1 million and will invest Rs 150 crore this fiscal as a part of its marketing initiatives.

"Sun Direct crossed the three-million subscriber mark as of March 31. Our active subscriber base is now 3.1-million. We will add at least three-million active subscribers in 2009-10.We also plan to spend Rs 150 crore in marketing this year,'' Sun Direct TV Chief Operating Officer, Mr Tony D'Silva told reporters here on Wednesday.

The Chennai-headquartered company, which began operations in September 2007, announced the launch of High Definition (HD) broadcast on a DTH platform. HDTV will improve the viewer experience by about five times over regular television.

Sun Direct, an 80:20 joint venture between the Chennai-based Maran family and Malaysia's Astro Group, has consistently maintained a share of 40 per cent in all DTH sales since January, Mr D'Silva said. - PTI
