MUMBAI: Sun Direct TV, Sun Group's direct-to-home company, has already received an investment of Rs 5.76 billion from Malaysia-based Astro.

Astro had agreed to pump in $166 million (Rs 7.47 billion) while taking a 20 per cent stake in Sun Direct TV through its wholly owned unit South Asia Entertainment Holdings Limited (SAEHL) over three years. In the first tranche, Astro had disbursed $80 million with the balance to be paid out in accordance with an agreed schedule based on the funding requirements of Sun Direct.

Sun Direct's ARPU (average revenue per user) has dropped to Rs 68 as it has aggressively mopped up over one million subsribers in the four southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. The Kalanithi Maran promoted DTH company had started with an initial ARPU of Rs 75 since the soft launch of the service in December 2007.

Sun's DTH subscriber base is expected to stay robust even as it has launched the service in markets outside the southern region.

Competition in the DTH sector has intensified with the launch of Reliance ADAG's Big TV and existing players Tata Sky and Dish TV have dropped their prices.

Sun Direct expects to incur losses for the first five to six years of operations. The company's peak funding requirement is estimated to be $670 million, spread over the first five years of operation.
