Sun Direct continues discount offer in lieu of DTH STBs

MUMBAI: Sun Direct is continuing the exchange offer that it started on 10 April, despite other DTH operators threatening to use the beating stick on the south player who has created a stir in the market with its predatory pricing.

The offer, which will go on till 20 April, allows subscribers of any DTH operator to exchange their existing DTH set-top box (STB) and take Sun Direct HD for Rs 7,500.

Earlier, Sun Direct had started promoting the new offer via television commercials. Other DTH players have opposed this as an unfair practice, saying they provide STBs to the customers on lease and it is their property.

Sun Direct has clarified in a note today that this offer is valid for only those customers who own the STBs.

In this offer, subscribers will get seven HD channels and over 100 popular channels on a one-year subscription, including the cost of STB and installation charges. Sun Direct HD claims five times sharper picture quality than normal TV.

Sun may get suits in exchange of STBs

NEW DELHI: The latest marketing initiative by direct-to-home (DTH) company Sun Direct that allows subscribers of rival companies to exchange their existing set-top-boxes (STB) for Sun’s hi-definition-enabled service could run into legal troubles.

Rival DTH firms say a large chunk of the set-top-boxes that are supplied to subscribers with new connections is ‘on lease’ and their ownership lies with the DTH Company. The consumer, therefore, cannot opt for the exchange offer and give the box to a third party. Said Dish TV chief operating officer Salil Kapoor, “If the consumer wants to disconnect the service, he can return the box to the DTH service provider.”

Rival DTH companies held informal talks with Sun TV last weekend expressing concern over the exchange offer as it may lead to legal battles, at least two persons with direct knowledge of the development said. At least one company said that it is looking at legal options to force Sun to withdraw the offer.

Under the offer, consumers can give their existing set-top-box to Sun in exchange for a discount of Rs 2,490 on Sun Direct’s high definition service, which is otherwise priced at around Rs 10,000.

Sun Direct COO Tony D Silva said the company is targeting the premium set of consumers who had subscribed to DTH services when it was launched. In its initial years, set-top-boxes were sold to the consumers and there was no lease model.

“It’s the customers’ prerogative whether they want to take up this exchange offer,” he said. Consumers can also opt for the service without the exchange option.

Currently DTH companies give the settop-box to consumers at a price that is lower than its actual cost, with the hope of recovering the money through subscription fees by retaining the customer for a long period. If the consumer opts out of the service soon after signing on to the service and exchanges or sells the hardware, it results in a loss for the service provider.

There are an estimated 22 million DTH subscribers in the country and players like Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV and Big TV use the lease model. Tata Sky consumers own the set-top-box but the smart card used to access signals is a property of the company.

While consumer durable and cell phone companies are known to launch such exchange offers DTH service providers say those sectors do not have a lease model. It is also the reason why such exchange schemes have never been introduced before in the DTH industry despite cutthroat competition to acquire new subscribers.

Umesh Rao, head of marketing at Reliance Big TV, said exchange offers are usually run for saturated product categories and the DTH market is largely untapped as of now. “There is no need for DTH players to run exchange offers,” he said.
